A Reading of E. Arsenio Manuel’s Prelude to Sex Studies via Philippineasian Studies

In exploring the unpublished research of the Filipinist Esperidión Arsenio Villarivera Manuel, I came across an exceptional paper distinct from his usual studies: Prelude to Sex Studies via Philippineasian Studies (n.d.), which focuses on sex—specifically on the sexual behavior of Filipinos. Consequently, this paper will attempt to examine Manuel’s perspective on sex and gender according to his five-part explanation on the “instinct” of Filipinos regarding (1) holding hands; (2) kissing; (3) hugging and embracing; and (4) sex syndrome. The methodology used in this research will be compared with those of his previous works directly related to language and linguistics: Lexicographic Study of Tayabas Tagalog (1971), Exploring Covert Meanings and Relationships among West Central Mindanao Epics through Etymological Analysis (1984), and Documenting Philippineasian (1994). To achieve a more holistic reading, the references used in Prelude to Sex Studies will also be scrutinized, along with Manuel’s intended meaning of Philippineasian Studies as a lens or analytical (conceptual) framework in research.
Within the corpus of words related to sex, the refinement of root words, affixes, and Manuel’s meticulous observations on the repetition of sounds reveal my main arguments: (1) the perspectives of Filipinos on sex are not fully represented by English and Tagalog; (2) stories about the body, particularly those concerning sex and the sexual behavior of ethnic heroes, are prevalent in the ethno-epics such as Hinilawod (2000), Agyu (1969), Tuwaang (1995), and others. Discussions about customs, culture, traditions, religion, and morality often use the relationship of a person with their own body and the body of others as a starting point. Thus, this paper will propose using Prelude to Sex Studies as an “appendix” in the literary analysis and critique of Filipino epics and folk stories in the Philippines.

Examination of Motherhood and Women Empowerment through Online Female Creators of Explicit Content

The perception of motherhood is generally influenced by the culture to which a woman grew up with. In the context of Filipino culture, motherhood is taken as a serious duty, as it reflects specific expectations of women as caregivers who devote their time and duties to their children, husbands or partners, and families as a whole. At the same time, the economic status of the country also compelled some women to use sex work as a means of surviving, relying on the generosity of clients and viewers to generate their own income by providing sexual activities. This study interviewed three women identified to be online creators of explicit content to discuss the issue surrounding motherhood while being engaged in online sex work. Through a narrative study, it was found out that creating sexually explicit content not only benefited them financially, but it also served as their way of accepting the changes their bodies went through after giving birth. Posting their content and receiving attention and engagement became their way of asserting their right to control how their bodies are perceived and experienced. Despite their work’s nature, the participants can still draw a line between their online activities and family life. Children of women who post not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content are shielded from the online personas their mothers have, which is one way of protecting them from the dangers of certain online activities. It is concluded that motherhood and empowerment can still be present in the lives of women who are engaged in sex work done online.

#Alternation: Isang Pananaliksik Ukol sa Kulturang Seksuwal ng LGBTQIA+ Community sa Platapormang Birtuwal ng Twitter sa Panahon ng Pandemyang Dulot ng COVID-19

Ang pag-aaral ay sinaliksik ang espasyong birtuwal na seksuwal ng Alter na sumibol sa social media platform na Twitter, at ang pangkabuoang daynamiko at pagpapanibagong hubog nito sa panahon ng pandemyang dulot ng COVID-19. Tinukoy sa pag-aaral na ito ang demograpikong katangian ng mga respondente, dalas at motibasyon nila sa paggamit ng Alter, panganib na maaari nilang harapin sa sapalarang pakikipagtalik sa Alter, pagkakaroon ng ilang respondente ng preperensya at petisismong seksuwal, at pagkakaroon ng petisismong seksuwal sa panahon ng pandemya. Gamit ang trayanggulisadong pamamaraan sa pananaliksik na lapat sa platapormang birtuwal ay nagsagawa ng mga sarbey, pakikipanayam at pagsasalarang na dinalumat ang kulturang seksuwal sa naturang espasyo. Sa pag-aanalisa ng datos ay lumalabas na mas aktibo ang mga respondente sa paggamit ng Alter ngayong pandemya; pagtugon sa kahingiang seksuwal ang pangunahing motibasyon ng mga respondente sa paggamit ng Alter; mapanganib ang sapalarang pakikipagtalik sa Alter lalo sa panahon ng pandemya; mayroong preperensya ang ilang alter users sa mga katangian ng kanilang makakatalik at kanilang paraan sa pakikipagtalik; at may nalinang na petisismong seksuwal ang mayorya ng mga respondente. Ang Alter ay nangangahulugang paglaya para sa malaking bilang ng mga Alter users dahil nagsisilbi itong alternatibong ikatlong espasyo sa pagtugon sa kanilang mga kahingian na siya ring lalong pinatitindi ng kinakaharap nating krisis pangkalusugan.

Ang Kamalayang Pangreproduktibo ng Maralitang Kababaihang Tagalungsod: Kaso ng Tundo-Maynila

Kalimitang suliranin ng maralitang tagalungsod ang kakulangan sa tirahan, kabuhayan at serbisyo publiko. Makikita ito sa mga uri ng pormasyon ng kilusang masa sa nakalipas na limang dekada ng kanilang pakikibaka mula 70s hanggang kasalukuyan. Subalit, sa papel na ito, itutuon ang pansin sa reproduktibong kalagayan ng maralitang kababaihan at sa partikular, ang sikolohiya nila sa kanilang reproduktibong kalusugan at karapatan. Paano nila tinitingnan ang artipisyal kontrasepsyon? Ano ang kanilang paniniwala sa anak? Sa pagbubuntis at panganganak? Sa aborsyon? Sa pag-aasawa? Sa mga sakit na nakukuha sa pagtatalik? Sa pagbebenta ng katawan? Paano nila tinatanggap, iniikutan o nilalabanan ang lahat ng balakid sa kanilang reproduktibong karapatan? Ito ang mga tanong na nais sagutin ng papel. Ipapakita rin dito ang iba’t ibang organisasyong pangkababaihan at ang naging papel nila sa pagwawasto at pagtataas ng kamalayan ng kababaihan sa usapin ng katawan, kalusugan, karapatan at kapangyarihan.
